We’ve had some typical Northern California early spring days here in Petaluma for the last two weeks although more rain is forecast and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that we won’t have any more hard frost.  A couple of gardeners have started some plantings at La Tercera Community Garden so Bobbie gave us some more details about which cold weather crops that can be started now:Â
Plants these seeds or seedlings outside in February to March:
Spinach; Swiss Chard
These seeds or seedlings can be planted outside in March:
Beets; Bok Choy; Carrots, Turnips; Salad Greens; Kale; Kohlrabi; Leeks; Lettuce
The following seeds can be planted in March and seedlings in April:
Brocoli; Cabbage; Cauliflower; Celery; Chinese Cabbage; Endive and Escarole; Peas
We’ve planted some seed potatoes already and Bobbie says they can be planted through the rest of February and March.  She recommends cutting off the flowers when they appear and that’s the time to start digging them up. There’s nothing quite as good as early potatoes fresh from the garden in spring time especially if they’re served with mint sauce. Yummie!
Meanwhile, if you’re interested in getting more information on what to plant and when, this is a very useful table from the UC Davis Vegetable Research and Information Center:

Happy planting!
