In 2013, the Bounty Farm Stand was moved to Petaluma Health Center. In order to better align food access efforts with nutrition and wellness initiatives, Petaluma Health Center patients are greeted with a weekly farm stand that operates June through October. Additionally, low-income patients are provided discounted prices (up to 50%) on all produce. Petaluma Bounty is able to offer this unique incentive through generous donations and a corporate sponsorship by Amy’s Kitchen, a Petaluma-based and family-owned company that makes organic and non-GMO foods.
Renamed the Bounty “Farmacy” in 2014, the farm stand was incorporated into wellness group offerings and grew a more stable following. Also in 2014, Petaluma Bounty offered Produce Prescription vouchers to low-income members of chronic disease management groups and other patient support services for patients facing diet-related issues. Sales to low-income or wholesale customers increased 297% from $926.30 in 2013 to $3,680 in 2014. Although its exciting to see the increase in sales, what is more exciting is that we are providing a viable local food access incentive where low-income customers can purchase healthy, sustainably grown produce. Also, Bounty farm staff members are building relationships, increasing awareness of other local food access incentives and helping decrease the distance and disconnect between consumers and farmers.
