Join Bounty Farm at the Annual MLK Day of Service

Petaluma Bounty hosts 5th Annual Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King

Monday, January 15th; 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Join your fellow community members for a day ON, not a day off by making a positive social impact in your community.

Petaluma Bounty invites community members to join their neighbors at the Bounty Community Farm, for a day of service. For the fifth year in a row, Bounty will be joining a nation-wide movement, led by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) to honor the memory of this important leader through service work. As a community food security project, Bounty pushes beyond the immediate demands of hunger relief toward community food security (and hunger prevention) with programming that expands our community’s capacity to feed each other today and into the future.

Participants are invited to bring their favorite quote or intention to celebrate or just enjoy a day of farm work, including mulching, weeding, garden maintenance, and greenhouse work.

All are welcome at this family-friendly event, located at 55 Shasta Ave. in Petaluma, to celebrate strong communities, food security, and action! All participants are asked to bring weather-appropriate clothes, shoes that can get dirty, lunch or snacks, and a water bottle. Groups of five or more are asked to rsvp at education@petalumabounty.org

In recognition of Dr. King’s incredible legacy of service to all, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service in 1994, and charged the CNCS, a federal agency, with leading this effort. According to the CNCS website, “The MLK Day of Service shines a spotlight on service as a powerful force to bridge economic and social divides today and throughout the year. National Days of Service provide Americans with an opportunity to join neighbors and local leaders to tackle community challenges and strengthen the nation.”

Director Suzi Grady states, “This important day will kick-off the farm season and volunteer activities for 2018. The Bounty Community Farm is where we manifest our vision of healthy food for everyone and volunteers are the heart of our operation.” Petaluma Bounty offers various volunteer opportunities and hosts new volunteer orientation the second Saturday of each month.

A program of Petaluma People Services Center, Petaluma Bounty’s mission is healthy food for everyone through collaboration, education and promoting self-reliance. Through our programs, Petaluma Bounty is improving the quality of food offered by emergency food distributors through the Bounty Hunters gleaning program. We are increasing low-income consumers’ purchasing power through local affordable food incentives such Market Match, sliding scale farm stands and CSA memberships, as well as maximizing awareness and participation in federal food programs such as WIC, SNAP, and Meals on Wheels.  We are increasing food literacy knowledge of how food is grown and where it comes from for children, youth and adults.  We are working to change attitudes and appetites for healthy food and active lifestyles.  We are expanding our community’s capacity to grow its own food by supporting the construction of community gardens and empowering others by sharing our knowledge.  And finally, we are engaging our whole community to become active, informed agents of change of their food system.

The MLK Day of Service is led by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that engages millions of Americans in service through its AmeriCorps, Senior Corps, and Volunteer Generation Fund programs and leads the nation’s volunteering and service efforts.
